Notes on the Claiming Crown Program
August 4th, 2007By Jude T. Feld
The Claiming Crown might best described as “the blue collar Breeders’ Cup.†It showcases some of our favorite hard-knocking claimers, giving them a shot at black-type glory and their owners a chance to win a trophy and some big money. Hosted by Ellis Park this year, it is the first time that the Claiming Crown will be conducted in Kentucky.
Ellis Park 4th Race – Claiming Crown Iron Horse) Trainer John Fahey, III’s stable is as hot as the Ellis Park weather. He saddles KENAI RIVER. The six-year-old gelding just won easily over the surface and should get a great trip from the outside post position.
Ellis Park 5th Race – Claiming Crown Express) With loads of speed entered here, IMPLICIT looks like “the closer to fear†as late handicapper Ernie Mason used to say.
Ellis Park 6th Race – Claiming Crown Glass Slipper) Maggi Moss, the top claiming owner in the nation will be represented by MAMA’S TEMPER. She should be able to stalk the leaders and pounce on them late.
Ellis Park 7th Race – Claiming Crown Tiara) WESTWARD MISS owns the best turf figure in the field. Off since May, she seems to fire her best races when fresh. Can Miguel Mena win three Claiming Crown races in a row?
Ellis Park 8th Race – Claiming Crown Rapid Transit) LOOKINFORTHESECRET is the “speed of the speed.†He’ll have to hold off NEVERBEENDANCIN’ who can rate but is drawn inside of him.
Ellis Park 9th Race – Claiming Crown Emerald) ZAPPA ships in from California where he has been training like a bomb for this race. Having excellent turf rider J. L. Castanon in the saddle only enhances his chances.
Ellis Park – 10th Race – Claiming Crown Jewel) Well-traveled ANDIAMO is living up to his Italian name (It means, “We go.) having raced in Florida, Maryland, New York and New Jersey in his last four starts. He’s in the Bluegrass now and looks very tough to beat after earning three big speed figures since his spring break.
